Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center – Ashland County Park District
Simonson Construction Services was honored to serve as the design-build contractor for the Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center, a legacy project located within the Tom Kruse Wildlife Park in Ashland County, Ohio. This outdoor education pavilion was developed in memory of David “Davy” McClure, a beloved local bus driver, parks commissioner, and outdoor education advocate whose passion for nature inspired generations of students.
Design work for the project began in the fall of 2023, with the McClure family breaking ground on May 7, 2024. Shortly after, Simonson mobilized and began site clearing, grading, and preparation for both the new 2,400-square-foot education facility and the paved parking lot that supports it.
Thoughtfully positioned at the northeast corner of the park’s fishing pond, the building connects existing recreational amenities—like hiking trails and fishing spots—with future features such as additional trails and pond study areas. The centerpiece of the facility is a nearly 2,000-square-foot open educational hall capable of hosting up to 61 guests for indoor events, programming, and community gatherings.
Designed to maximize its natural surroundings, the north wall of the center features 10-foot-tall storefront windows that offer panoramic views of the surrounding forest, farmland, and pond. A large, canopy-covered patio on the west side of the building extends the usable space outdoors, offering a shaded retreat during warmer months.
The structure includes four restrooms—two accessible from inside and two with exterior access for park visitors. To support cost-efficiency and sustainability, donated Azek siding was incorporated into the exterior cladding.
Simonson proudly self-performed a wide range of work on this project, including architectural design, sitework, underground utilities, framing, siding, roofing, door and hardware installation, and final finishes. This design-build project showcases our commitment to enhancing local communities through high-quality, functional, and beautifully integrated construction.
The Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center now stands as a year-round hub for outdoor learning, recreation, and reflection—an enduring tribute to Davy’s legacy and love for nature.
